What are Megagames?

A Megagame or MegaGame is a type of large-scale simulation which can contain elements of role-playing games, tabletop games and wargames, varying from game to game. I have worked on several online Megagames since 2020.

You died. After death you emerged from the river, your memory shot to pieces, in the city of the dead. 

 

The Necropolis is a bizarre city. Everything here – even the objects - is a ghost, a memory. The buildings that stand here all collapsed into rubble on Earth. Modern skyscrapers stand alongside Gothic cathedrals and earthwork huts. Souls walks the patchwork streets dressed in rags, tee-shirts, ballgowns and clanking metal armour. 

 

For longer than most souls can remember, the Silent King sat upon his throne in an ancient tower at the heart of the city. The Silent King was a distant and feared ruler with the power to strip away the memories of his subjects. Under his regime fragments of memory and self became a form of currency. But now the Silent King has disappeared. His throne lies vacant and many of the dead look upon it with envious or fearful eyes. Angels and demons lurk on the periphery of the political conflict, empowering those who accept their gifts. 

 

With the King’s demise, memories are starting to return, bringing purpose and unlocking power. The fight for the Throne is not all; with the Silent King gone, perhaps the afterlife can change in more than just political terms. Perhaps there are other ways to live after death. 

 

Unlock your memories. Choose your path. Decide the future of the afterlife.

Dusk City by Night is a Play by Email game where you play as one of the Awakened, vampires who live among and apart from humanity. 

 

You will be thrust into the midst of a competition to prove your worthiness to lead, while also tangling with issues of morality and consequence. Vie for territory and influence through manipulation, persuasion, or force. Forge connections with players and NPCs alike in order to pursue whatever plotlines and personal quests catch your attention. Take advantage of the powers that Awakening has granted you, while being wary of the price that comes with your power. Pay careful attention to the Tether that binds you to humanity - too close, and feeding may become unthinkable. Too far, and it becomes all too easy.

 

And, above all, remember: with every choice there is a consequence, and the city does not forget so easily.

You are a demigod, a child of one of the Olympian Gods, invited to London to compete in the Gods’ Wars, a competition among demigods in which the winners become Gods themselves. This competition has been run countless times across countless worlds, with countless themes. Demigods have intervened to rig elections, intercede in succession crises, start wars, and more! 

It is the start of the season in (near) London 1880. People are scrambling to find love and acquire proposals from the most eligible members of society. Attend balls and other social events, and romance and befriend mortals and demigods alike.

However, in order to Ascend, demigod participants must please the Gods. The Gods are fickle and varied. Some may urge war, others peace, and still others, love. In order to truly understand and satisfy them, you will have to develop relationships with them and score points in their Aspect. Complete Quests for specific Gods or take other actions related to these Aspects and win their favor. 

Will you win the honor and privilege of ascending to Godhood or will you pursue love, wherever it may lead?

For as long as any can remember, the maelstrom has been impassable, wracked by impossible, immobile storms. Yet it was not always so, and occasionally a brave or foolhardy sailor takes a vessel into the maelstrom. They bring back treasures and strange rumours of what lies beyond are whispered throughout the world. Cities of the living dead. Unspeakable creatures that live beneath the waves.

 

These tales mostly describe their neighbours, entire nations reduced to myth and fairy tales, but there are stranger things in the eye of the storm...

 

The unnatural storms receded a few weeks ago. Cautiously, the powers that neighbour this tempestuous sea sent ships to explore. They came back. It seems the forbidden, impassable ocean is open – at least for now – but what waits out there in the dark? What caused the impossible storms, and why have they stopped now?

 

A game of exploration, adventure, politics and horror.

The world you knew is gone, conquered and corrupted. The rich feed – literally – upon the poor as bloodthirsty vampires. These terrible, immortal rulers used their supernatural power and the temptation of eternal life to bring the world to heel.

 

They have created a society of predator and prey, of owner and owned. A pyramid of blood, with those beneath taxed and exploited for their wealth, labour and their blood.

Not all submitted. You are among what could be the very last pocket of resistance, forced to live on the fringes of an ancient and terrible forest. For a time you were ignored. Beneath notice. But the thirsting tyrants and their armies are coming now, looking to extinguish the last embers of rebellion and hope.
